The Wealthy Musician

During Indie Week this year, I attended sessions that focused on helping artists get more income, and here’s some ideas for y’all.

Music Licensing. Licensing/synching your tunes can be a lucrative revenue stream. Get yer songs on film, TV and ads.  In fact, if you can pull off a “sounds like” song that is similar to big artists, music supervisors prefer that cuz it’s cheaper for them. If you are the songwriter, artist, and label that’s even better because it’s a one stop shop for clearing rights and is more streamlined. If you are in a group, make sure you decide on the split from the get-go! Look outside Canada and the US. Educate yourself on the process, record songs in different formats, and understand how your will get paid.

Speaking of getting paid, your songs need to have CODES.

ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is your Performance Identifier. It’s the universal identification number for each sound recording (12 alphanumeric digits).

UPC (Universal Product Code) is the Release Identifier for your song.

ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code) is an 11-digit code used to identify each individual musical work. These codes are used in data systems across the industry.

NFT’s (Non-Fungible Tokens) From what I know, this is where your fans are emotionally and financially invested in your success. You can sell off a portion of your future master royalties too. Just ask Our Lady Peace.

Register With Collectives. The big ones are SOCAN, Resound and ACTRA RACS. Click below for ACTRA RACS awesome cheat sheet on which collectives you should register with.

https://actraracs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/COLLECTING-ROYALTIES-IN-CANADA.pdf

Since SoundExchange is the USA, you can work with Canadian organizations to collect those royalties as part of their international partnerships, or you can register directly with SoundExchange to collect any US-based performer and owner royalties that might be available to you.

15 ideas for playing live as a solo artist

1. Always tip the bartender

2. Always start on time

3. Play a little over the allotted time but only by one song, especially if the crowd is engaged. If the crowd asks for more chances are the bar manager will offer to extend another hour $$

4. Play music people are familiar with

5. No drinking…well maybe 2 or even 3 to loosen up but that’s it

6. Never drugs

7. Tell a few stories but not too many unless it's a songwriters circle. Usually in a bar it's loud and the crowd just wants to hear music

8. Check your sound, too loud kills the gig, too low and you won't be heard

9. Climatize- It usually takes a few songs for the crowd to get used to you and for you to get used to the crowd

10. End first set with a great upbeat song (maybe your best)

11. End the night with your best two fast songs

12. Slow song every 5th song? Unless they are all slow songs

13. Promote, don't rely on the bar to bring the crowd

14. Plant friendlies in the crowd, it's going to be a way better night if you have fans already in the crowd

15. The crowd feeds off your energy, it's up to you to create it

Tips for release day

If you haven’t already done so, checkout the Release Checklist to find out what you need to prepare for your big day weeks in advance.

SO… it’s the day of the release, here are some quick tips to help you during the big day.

1. Optimize your social media channels- be sure to update links, images, and wording on all your social media channels including Website, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify etc. Change the headers, profile image and wording about your new release.

2. Make sure all music links are working in your social channels and direct back to your music locations- Spotify, Apple Etc.

3. Release your music anywhere and everywhere- all social media, press releases, email blasts, media, bloggers, publications etc. Make a list beforehand of all the places you want your press release to go.

4. Make it personal, talk about the journey and how you got to this point, what your music is about and be sure to thank and tag all other musicians, producers, and collaborators.

5. Setup ads to push your music to all your fans and beyond. Remember you can promote your music for many months, it doesn’t all have to be done in one day. Test different ads to see which ones are getting the best traction and boost those.

What is sync liscencing

A sync
license (short for synchronization license) is a type of music license that
allows music to be used in synchrony with visual media such as film,
television, video games, and advertisements. Here's how sync licensing works:

Identifying the right music:
Sync licensing starts with identifying the right piece of music to
accompany the visual content. This could be an existing song, an original
composition, or a piece of music specifically written for the project.

Negotiating the license: Once
the right music has been identified, the music's rights-holders (usually
the songwriter, publisher, or music publisher) must be contacted to
negotiate the terms of the license. This will typically involve
discussions around the usage, the length of the license, and the fee to be
     paid.

Payment of fees: If an
agreement is reached, the next step is to pay the agreed fee for the sync
license. This fee is usually a one-time payment for the specific usage
     agreed upon.

Use of the music: Once the
sync license has been granted, the music can be used in the visual
content. This may involve recording the music, editing it to fit the
visual content, or using an existing recording of the song.

Royalties: After the music
has been used, the songwriter and/or music publisher will typically
receive ongoing royalty payments for the use of the music. These royalties
are collected by performing rights organizations such as ASCAP and BMI.

Sync licensing is a valuable
source of revenue for musicians and songwriters, and it allows their music
to reach new audiences through its use in visual media. It's an important
part of the music industry, and it's a key factor in the success of many
     artists and musicians.
